Meet “Anthony”
At 25 years old, Anthony is beginning a new chapter.
Like many people who come to OneHeart, his story is not defined by a single decision, but by a series of challenges, setbacks, and courageous choices.
Anthony was once a competitive wrestler with a bright future ahead of him. But as he struggled with his mental health, alcohol became what he describes as a temporary solution to a much deeper pain. What began as a way to stop panic attacks eventually became something that controlled his life.
His grades suffered. Opportunities disappeared. Relationships changed. And slowly, Anthony found himself withdrawing from the world around him.
Today, Anthony is working to reclaim his future.
As of this writing, he is celebrating 185 days of sobriety.
One of the most significant choices Anthony made was deciding that if he wanted his life to change, his environment had to change too. He walked away from influences and situations that were pulling him backward and took a leap of faith by entering programming at OneHeart.
“I realized alcohol is a temporary bandage for a lot more pain.” That realization changed everything.
Though Anthony has only been on campus for a few weeks, he has already embraced the structure and accountability that recovery requires. His days are filled with work, classes, and personal growth. He remains focused on maintaining his sobriety while building a foundation for the life he wants to create.
What surprises him most about OneHeart?
The peace.
At first, he was nervous to enroll. Today, he says one of his favorite things about OneHeart is knowing that people genuinely care. “Every single person in the towers actually cares.”
For someone who spent years isolating himself, learning to trust people again is a major milestone.
Anthony credits several people with helping him stay on course, including his probation officer, his therapist Macy, his Care Coordinator Hannah, and family members who encouraged him to break free from unhealthy cycles. He says Hannah’s encouragement helps remind him that he is moving in the right direction and motivates him to keep pursuing his goals.
Those goals are ambitious.
Anthony hopes to continue his recovery, regain his driver’s license, return to college, and ultimately build a career helping others based on his volunteering with organizations like Cornerstone Rescue Mission and his job as a job coach Black Hills Works because serving others has become an important part of his own healing journey.
His dream is simple:
To build a life he looks forward to every day.
To discover his purpose.
To surround himself with people who motivate him to become the best version of himself.
Anthony knows the road ahead won’t always be easy. Recovery is hard work. Personal growth is hard work. Building a new life from the ground up is hard work.
But he also knows something else: “The only person who can hold me back is myself.”
Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing Anthony’s journey as he works toward the goals he’s set for himself. You’ll hear about the victories, the challenges, the lessons, and the milestones along the way.
And then there’s gratitude. In the back-and-forth communication for Anthony to refine and sign off on this article, his message was one of gratitude: “Thank you for being part of giving me a second chance at life.”
Today, we’re inviting you to join us in cheering Anthony on. Because transformation doesn’t happen overnight. It happens one decision, one day, and one brave step at a time.
Welcome to the OneHeart journey, Anthony. We’re honored to walk alongside you.
Follow along as we chronicle Anthony’s path from isolation to connection, from survival to purpose, and from sobriety to the future he’s working so hard to build.
