Thirty days ago, JB began his guest chronicle journey with a commitment to build a different future. While the path hasn’t been without obstacles, his first month has been defined by steady progress, growing confidence, and a renewed sense of hope.
One of the biggest milestones this month has been JB’s success at work. He recently moved into a new position and has taken pride not only in his professional advancement but also in staying committed to his sobriety and repairing important family relationships. Along the way, he has formed meaningful friendships within the OneHeart community and learned the importance of setting healthy boundaries to protect his recovery, even when those decisions are difficult.
Like many people rebuilding their lives, JB has also faced challenges. Transportation has been his biggest hurdle. The cost of getting back and forth to work has made it difficult to put money into savings, but rather than becoming discouraged, he views the situation as temporary and remains focused on where he is headed rather than where he is today.
JB’s experience underscores why OneHeart’s transportation program is such a critical part of how we operate and of guest success. Reliable transportation helps guests get to work, attend appointments, meet program commitments, and continue building stability at a time when even one missed ride can severely threaten hard-won progress. Our longtime Transportation Coordinator, Morris, recently moved to another state, and we are currently struggling to find a qualified, suitable replacement to carry this essential work forward.
What has helped him push through those challenges is the confidence and purpose he is finding in his new lifestyle. JB says that being clean and sober has helped him feel genuinely happy again. Positive feedback from supervisors at work has reinforced his sense of value, and new opportunities continue to motivate him. A particularly meaningful moment came when his Community Health Worker, Mackenzie Staten, posted JB’s first chronicle article on the board at the Respite Center!
“That made me feel good about myself,” he reflected.
Looking toward the future, JB’s primary goal is securing reliable transportation. He believes owning a vehicle will create new opportunities and allow him to become even more involved in his son’s life. At the same time, he remains committed to continued growth and doesn’t want to lose momentum.
Q: What are you working toward next?
“Getting my own vehicle. Once I have that, I want to be more involved in my son’s life. I don’t want to get too comfortable. I want to keep striving toward my goals and growing.”
Perhaps the most significant change JB describes isn’t something you can see. It’s how he feels.
When he first arrived, uncertainty and worry consumed much of his energy. Today, he describes feeling safer, healthier, and more secure. Having a stable place to live and a supportive environment has allowed him to focus on personal growth instead of constant survival.
“I know I’m safe here, and I have what I need.”
As Month One comes to a close, JB’s story demonstrates that transformation often begins with small, consistent steps. Through sobriety, employment success, healthier relationships, and a growing sense of stability, he is laying the groundwork for a future that once may have seemed out of reach. While challenges remain, JB continues moving forward with determination, purpose, and a clear vision for what comes next.
The Long Road continues next month with another update on JB’s journey of healing, growth, and transformation.
