Thirty days may not seem like a long time, but for Early Bird, the last month has been filled with determination, discipline, and meaningful progress.
One of his biggest accomplishments has been staying committed to his recovery journey. Early Bird has completed an impressive 90 NA meetings in 90 days, a milestone that reflects not only serious consistency but a deep commitment to building a different future for himself. At the same time, he has been working hard in the classroom at Western Dakota Technical College, earning four A’s in his courses.
At OneHeart, Early Bird has had the stability, encouragement, and space to focus on what matters most to him. Through options-based planning, he has been able to identify his own priorities, weigh the paths available to him, and build a plan that supports recovery, education, and greater independence—all at a pace that keeps him in the driver’s seat.
Of course, growth is rarely easy.
When asked what has been hardest this month, Early Bird shared that balancing everything has been a challenge. Between attending meetings, serving as a chairperson for NA, keeping up with schoolwork, and managing life’s day-to-day responsibilities, there is a lot to keep track of. Recovery, education, and personal growth all require time and attention, and he is learning how to navigate those demands while staying focused on his goals.
What keeps him moving forward?
His answer was simple and powerful: he wants a better life. He wants to maintain his sobriety, continue lengthening his time clean, and create a successful future for himself. Those goals continue to fuel his determination every day.
Looking ahead, Early Bird is focused on obtaining his work permit and continuing his NA progress. Both are important steps toward greater independence, stability, and long-term success.
Perhaps one of the most meaningful signs of growth came when he reflected on the question: “What feels different today compared to when you first arrived at OneHeart.”
“My schedule is more balanced and well-rounded,” Early Bird replied.
That may sound simple, but structure, balance, and healthy routines are often some of the strongest foundations for lasting change. Instead of simply reacting to life, Early Bird is actively building one.
And there is something special on the horizon. This fall, he is looking forward to spending Halloween with his nephew, an opportunity that represents more than just a fun holiday. It is a reminder that recovery creates space for relationships, memories, and moments that once may have felt out of reach.
Thirty days into this journey, Early Bird is proving that progress isn’t just measured by milestones. It’s measured by showing up, staying committed, and continuing to move forward one day at a time.
We’re proud of the work he’s putting in and excited to see where the next chapter of his journey leads.
The Long Road continues next month with another update on Early Bird’s journey of recovery, growth, and transformation.
