The Long Road: Laila Love at 30 Days
Thirty days into her journey, Laila Love is beginning to
experience something that many people in recovery hope for but often struggle
to imagine: the opportunity to not only improve her own life, but to inspire
others along the way.
This month brought an accomplishment that filled her with
both pride and purpose. Laila successfully completed the “Within My
Reach” classes through Youth & Family Services (YFS), an achievement
that required commitment, focus, and perseverance. But earning the certificate
was only part of the story. Recognizing her dedication and growth, YFS selected
Laila to serve as an advocate for future participants. She will help encourage
and motivate others who may be struggling, showing them that success is
possible if they stay the course.
For Laila, being entrusted with that responsibility carries
significant meaning. It is validation that others see leadership, strength, and
potential in her. More importantly, it gives her an opportunity to use her own
experiences to help someone else find hope.
Not everything this month was easy, however.
When asked what had been most difficult, Laila reflected on
the lingering consequences of her past.
Question: What has been hard this month?
Laila’s Answer: “Learning that I have to pay
a $100 fee to reinstate my driver’s license.”
While the amount itself may seem small in the grand scheme
of life, the fee served as a reminder that rebuilding a life takes time and
that old mistakes can continue to create obstacles long after someone begins
making positive changes. Laila also faced the seasonal realities of her
employment. As tourist season winds down, work has slowed and opportunities to
earn tips have decreased, creating additional financial stress and uncertainty.
Yet despite those challenges, Laila found motivation in the
support surrounding her.
The encouragement she received from the staff and
participants at YFS helped her continue moving forward. Being selected as an
advocate reinforced her belief that she is making meaningful progress and
inspired her to keep pursuing her goals. For perhaps the first time in a long
time, she is seeing evidence that her efforts matter and that others recognize
the hard work she is putting into changing her future.
With one milestone completed, Laila is already focused on
the next.
Her immediate goal is to continue working toward her GED by
taking the math portion of the exam. She hopes to complete her GED by December,
an accomplishment that would open even more doors for her future. Rather than
feeling intimidated by the challenge, she is approaching it one step at a time,
understanding that every small victory brings her closer to achieving something
larger.
Perhaps the most meaningful part of Laila’s 30-day check-in
came during her reflection on personal growth.
When asked what feels different about herself compared to
when she first arrived at OneHeart, Laila shared that she has gained knowledge,
perspective, and confidence. She believes sobriety and the opportunities
available through OneHeart have opened doors she would never have considered
while in active addiction.
Looking back, she recognizes that her mindset was one of the
biggest barriers she faced. Today, she sees possibilities where she once saw
limitations. She is learning, growing, and building a life with purpose.
Then she shared a simple but profound observation that
perfectly captures the transformation taking place:
“I’m actually living life and not just being
alive.”
In many ways, that single sentence tells the story of Laila’s
reflection this past 30 days.
She is no longer simply surviving. She is participating in
her own future. She is setting goals, overcoming obstacles, helping others, and
discovering strengths she may not have known she possessed. The road ahead will
undoubtedly bring new challenges, but Laila is beginning to see herself not as
someone defined by her past, but as someone actively creating a different
future.
We could not be prouder of her accomplishments this month,
and we look forward to watching her continue to grow, achieve, and inspire
others through the journey ahead.
